BIG
CAT SAFARI
Fossil
and archaeological evidence confirms that East Africa
is the cradle of humankind. It is also home to several
of the world's most elegant big cats- lion, leopard,
and cheetah. Throughout history, cats and humans have
coexisted as both friend and foe. The cats are symbols
of power and mysticism. Some are large, dangerous adversaries
and others are smaller beloved members of our households.
Using
the behavior and ecology of modern predators in the
woodlands and savannas of Tanzania in conjunction with
controlled experiments, researchers from the Rutgers
University Center for Human Evolutionary Studies (CHES)
have decoded the nearly two million year-old fossil
human and archaeological sites at Olduvai Gorge. What
emerged is a fascinating new picture of our early ancestors.
It
shows them not as mighty hunters, a myth that has prevailed
since Charles Darwin's time, but as sly scavengers of
animal kills made and abandoned by large cats. Although
lethal adversaries, these predators played a crucial
role in shaping human destiny.

these big cats with CHES Safaris here.

HUMAN
ORIGINS
Olduvai Gorge contains one of the world's most complete
and well-preserved fossil and archaeological records pertaining
to the behavioral evolution of our species.
Beginning with the decades of work by famed paleoanthropologists,
Louis and Mary Leakey, Olduvai continues to yield spectacular
artifacts and human and animal fossils from their geological
crypts of sediments and volcanic ash.
Today, the gorge is the domain of a joint Tanzanian and
American team consisting of scientists from many different
disciplines and headed by Dr. Fidelis Masao and Dr. Rob
Blumenschine.
