The
Best Times to Take Your Safari
There are two rainy seasons in Tanzania: the long rains occur
from late March through May, and the short rains from November
until January. The long rains usually fall in short, heavy
downpours, often accompanied by brief storms. Although exciting,
road travel can occasionally be slow. The short rains tend
to be much less severe and more pleasant. However, optimal
times for a safari are July through October and December through
March.
The latter months are also the prime time in which to view
the spectacular migration of the wildebeest, zebra, and gazelles
to their calving grounds on the short grass plains of the
Serengeti. Here you will drive through nearly 2 million of
them. It's the largest aggregation of animals on the planet.
During this period, the plains are also patrolled by large
numbers of big cats (primarily lion and cheetah) as well as
hyenas that prey upon this moveable feast.
During the dry season, from June through October, one can
view the equally spectacular migratory elephants that congregate
by the thousands in Tarangire National Park.
